Program

Many parents embark on what I call “the unexpected journey.” Their time is consumed by going to doctors, reading whatever they can get their hands on, surfing the internet for information, and attending workshops. They research the latest therapies, the “best” doctors, medications, diets, anything that might help. In the end, they have enough clinical information to fill a warehouse! Yet, the more information they compile, the more confused and overwhelmed they become.

It was during this period of information gathering and processing that I recognized a critical need was not being addressed. I could not find any resources that helped me address my own feelings. While expending an inordinate amount of energy caring for my son, I still felt guilty that I wasn’t doing enough for him and was concerned that I wasn’t meeting my daughter’s needs. I was resentful as I watched my friends plan play dates for their children while I was struggling to plan a half-hour therapy session for my son. Having to address these issues, and many more, was very difficult and something no one seemed to talk about. All the literature and information focused on how to help my child. I never heard anyone talk about what life was like for me, and if I did, it was a pity party.

Recognizing this tremendous need for this type of outreach, I developed : A series of interactive empowerment workshops that address the unique emotional realities that a child with special needs brings to a family.
